East and Market's Mission

Posted by Renee Jones on

My personal and social mission for East and Market is to promote talented, inspiring people and to find a ways to reduce  negative effects my company may have on the environment. I am going to strive to find ways to give back to the community.

Our focus is to provide well-constructed fashionable hand crafted apparel, accessories, and home goods with a focus on sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint on the environment. In order to do this we will buy discarded fabric from large fabric mills or stores, locate discarded fabric from thrift, and to promote custom orders using recycled materials.

We will strive to promote local artistry and use high quality products from small named brands when possible. It is our goal to create and maintain bonds with other local shops and charities while promoting teaching of craft skills.

I am so guilty of being a victim to fast fashion. I have always been  the first person to jump at a deal and buy 2 pieces of clothing that I"like" to give up that one piece that I "LOVE".

Then I spend the next year kicking myself, thinking about that jacket I should have bought... buuuuut,, then I do it all over again the next time I see a deal that I think is too good to be true!! I've been addicted to finding clothing that is easy for me to discard. Meaning, guilt free. When the reality is, I have never really given that much thought to where my clothes go after I send them to good will and they get discarded from there. Next to Big Oil, the fashion industry is thought to be the second largest polluter in the world......whaaaaaat??!!! The carbon footprint it leaves behind is tremendous!!

Starting this business has really made me think about what is important to me in terms of reducing waste.

East and Market has a long way to go, but this is the start to make a better life for us and hopefully for you!

In order to fight the waste that we could possibly have a part in, I want to start an incentive to buy back all of the clothes you have bought from us that you no longer have a use for, or that is worn, or no longer has a space or place in your closet. It is my mission to buy these once loved pieces and transform them into something beautiful again. I want them to live on in another form. Stay tuned for information about this program in the near future! Feel free to comment me with your thoughts or ideas!
